I’m after pure visual energy. I’ve used color, shape, order and irregularity to this end. The compositions are improvisational but carefully structured. I want the shapes and the colors to have a singular presence and achieve movement when joined-up within groups. Positioning of color is either to contrast or be closely matched. Some paintings have unique systems of balance between the blocks, while others rely on the grid by creating all-over pattern. Space is defined with a variety of figure ground relationships. Dimensionality is achieved with the stacking of squares and rings. The introduction of rings adds counter-balance and opposes the straightness of the squares. The rings either sit within a square or sit side by side. In both cases a union is attained between stillness and unending activity.
